Harissa is a hilltop shrine above Jounieh, home to the Our Lady of Lebanon statue, reached either by the Jounieh Teleferique cable car or a 15-minute drive. It is one of Lebanon’s most visited pilgrimage sites and offers panoramic views over Jounieh Bay.

Getting there: cable car or car

The Teleferique climbs directly from Jounieh to Harissa and is the more memorable route — the views over the bay on the ascent are the main attraction. Driving takes roughly 15 minutes up a winding road and suits visitors with limited mobility or those continuing further into the mountains.

What to see

The bronze Our Lady of Lebanon statue sits atop a spiral staircase that visitors can climb for views across the bay. The adjacent modern basilica is open to visitors, and the terrace is the best vantage point at sunset.

When to visit

Late afternoon gives the best light and cooler temperatures. Sundays and religious holidays are considerably busier. The site is open year-round, though mountain weather can close in during winter.

Practical notes

Modest dress is appropriate as this is an active religious site. Allow two to three hours including the cable car round trip.

Where to stay nearby

Al Murjan Palace Hotel is minutes from the Teleferique base station, with free private parking. Browse rooms or call +961 71 284 112.
